MAYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
ABLE CHILDREN
We believe that every individual should have the opportunity to develop and realise their true potential. To ensure that this happens, we aim to consistently provide learning opportunities for our able children that offer challenge, intellectual stimulation and an enriched curriculum. We believe that the able child needs just as much support, guidance and encouragement as the less able.
Mayville has appointed a senior member of staff as our Able Child Co-ordinator. The Co-ordinator liases with our Learning Extension Unit to ensure that we identify all gifted and talented pupils within our community and that they receive appropriate acknowledgement and extension.
Mayville High School is a member of The National Association for Gifted Children.
AIMS
Our main aims are to:
- Identify all gifted and talented children as early as possible in their time at the school.
- Develop the specific skills and talents of each individual child enabling them to function at higher cognitive levels and develop any particular flair they may have in music, the arts, sport and other areas.
- Recognise each child as an individual and be concerned for the whole child, socially, emotionally and intellectually.
- Offer an entitlement to an appropriate education involving activities that are richer, broader and deeper, going beyond the normal curriculum.
- Recognise that these children may have emotional and/or social problems, or may present themselves as underachievers or children with learning difficulties.
- Work largely within the classroom environment, ensuring that children are challenged and extended.
- Streamed teaching where appropriate.
- Utilise our knowledge of Accelerated Learning, Preferred Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligence Profiles to target work effectively.
- Provide and make resources available to facilitate children`s learning.
- Record and review progress.
- Inform and involve parents.
- Consult and liaise with other agencies where appropriate.
Provide opportunities for enrichment and extension beyond the classroom. Master classes, focus days, residential courses, and competitions are amongst extras being offered to challenge and motivate pupils.
