Introduction
Welcome to Mayville's website. I have been associated with the school since 2000, initially as a teacher and, since January 2009, as Head teacher. I am extremely proud of the unique educational environment we provide and hope that you will visit us to see what we can offer.

Mayville High School is a small, independent school situated close to the seafront in Southsea. Mayville School is a Registered Charity no 286347 and a not for profit business, therefore every penny of profit goes back into the education of our pupils, and the improvement of our facilities.  Founded in 1897, it now consists of a Nursery Department for babies and children from 6 months - 4, a Pre-prep Department which takes boys and girls from 4 - 7, a Junior School for girls and boys from 7 - 11, and a Senior School, which accepts girls and boys until they are 16.

Whilst these departments operate autonomously, we believe that the continuity available is of great benefit to the children and we meet together for special events such as Harvest Festival, Christmas activities, our annual Summer Fair, Sports Days, Drama Productions and other celebrations. Senior pupils enjoy a caring relationship with younger members of the school.

At the core of Mayville's philosophy is the knowledge that it is the happy child who will learn, the confident pupil with high self-esteem who will best fulfil his or her academic potential. Each child at Mayville is a valued member of our community, regardless of academic ability and our aim is that through flexible teaching, varied resources, support programmes and high expectations, we endeavour to meet the needs of each individual and help them to achieve both academically and in other areas of the curriculum.

Mayville pupils are part of a caring community and are taught to respect and support each other. From our secure base they learn to meet the challenges of the wider world. Education is a three way process involving the school, the child and parents and we encourage parents to be involved with their child's school life.

Originally a girls' school, Mayville now offers the opportunity for boys to enjoy the benefits of the small school environment, where every child is known well and each child is a 'star' in some area. Mayville understands that whilst boys and girls are equal, they are not the same; they do not necessarily always share the same interests, nor do they learn in the same way. To meet these individual needs, Mayville teaches the core subjects in separate by gender, but parallel groups.

We moved our Nursery into a new building 'the cottage', in January 04 and this is providing us with the opportunity to offer 'the Mayville experience' to babies and children from six months old.  We have also redeveloped our accomodation to provide bases for the girls and boys in the senior school that include a new science laboratory and computer area complete with interactive white boards. The school is fully co-educational through to Y11 and we have maintained a 50/50 balance of boys and girls.

This process has seen major developments of our building including a small hall, a new science laboratory, a fully equiped large and bright music room, a pupose built art studio as well as new state of the art buildings for the whole pre-prep department and some junior facilities with additional upgrades for the junior and nursery school.

The final phase of building is due for completion for the start of the academic year 2008-09.

The school was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in April 2002 and will be due for re-inspection in 2008.  As agreed during discussions with the inspectors, Mayville is a difficult school to inspect because of its unique nature, but I was pleased that they were able to capture the essence of this and, in particular realised the importance of our concentration on the wellbeing and care of the individual.  A full report of the inspection is posted on our website, but the summary of the inspection stated :-

Historically, pupils leaving Mayville have all moved on to local colleges and further education and some even move further afield to continue their studies.  We are well served in the local area for colleges that offer a huge range of courses in both the academic and non-academic subjects.  Most students will then go on to University or specialised schools such as Stage School or Military College.

Our academic results can tell part of our story, but we are proud of how our students succeed at GCSE, scoring well above the national averages.  With pupils who range from 'Able and Gifted' children to those that have 'Special Needs', Mayville is unique in being able to extend and support all pupils individually.

Mayville holds the Investors in People award. I am sure we all agree that the major impact upon the success of the school and the pupils within, is our staff.  To this end and because I believe a caring school should ensure it 'cares' for staff as well as pupils, we have been using the standards of this award to promote our management and organisation within the school.

After an inspection of our Dyslexia Unit in 2004 it has once again been accredited with DU status by CReSTeD (The Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils).

Mayville sets high standards in social, creative, physical and academic skills and our pupils enthusiastically rise to meet the challenges set.

To help meet the needs of parents and pupils we offer pre-school, after school and holiday sessions (encompassing sport, music, art and drama).  Prep sessions in the Senior School are also offered. There is also a wide range of after school clubs and lunch clubs.  Indeed Mayville is open from 8.00 a.m to 6.00 p.m for 50 weeks of the year.

I look forward to having the opportunity to show you around the school and illustrating Mayville's unique character to prospective parents along with your child or children.
