Introduction Junior Subjects Open Day
The school has a caring nature, every child can excel in something. I've seen a growing confidence in my children with much one to one attention. They are happy confident children, in well disciplined separate boy and girl classes.

The Junior School

The Junior School accepts boys and girls from the age of 7+. Bright airy surroundings, a caring yet disciplined environment and small class sizes are all key elements in creating the positive learning experience that children at Mayville enjoy. Through Mayville's innovative approach to teaching, attention is given to each individual pupil, ensuring that the highest possible standards are acheived. Expectations are high yet pupils are gently guided to become self-motivated, determined, considerate and resilient.

At Mayville Little Things Build The Bigger Picture

A strong emphasis is placed on the traditional skills of reading and writing, and numeracy, but children in the Junior School enjoy a varied curriculum which includes science, art, history, geography, design and technology, religious education,ICT,French and physical education. Recognising the different educational needs of boys and girls mean that they continue to be taught separately in the core subjects. The principles of Multi-Intelligence Profiling and Accelerated Learning are used to inform teachers of individual learning styles.

Pupils are taught to appreciate that education is as much about attitudes and values as it is about academic and sporting success. The Junior School has a Code of Conduct, which provides pupils with a clear set of rules and guidelines to enable them to become responsible members of our community.

At Mayville we know what we do works because our pupils and parents tell us it does.

"Any achievment, big or small is recognised". (Parent)

Changing the Learning Environment is Important at Mayville:

All of our trips are aimed at enhancing the learning journey for your children, while they are at Mayville. Visits include  Southsea Castle to look more closely at Tudor History, Portchester Castle, and Fishbourne Palace. We visit Portsdown Hill and Wickham Village for Geography field trips. Intech in Winchester is part of our Technology and Science study. Most of our  educational day trips are included in the cost of the termly fees, as part of our ongoing quest to offer value for money.

The Juniors in MiddleIII/UpperIII (years 5 and 6), get the opportunity to visit a Chateau in France. The visit is aimed at improving  language skills, and learning more about French culture.  The pupils in Middle and Upper III (years 5 and 6), also have the opportunity to go on a skiing trip, which proves very popular.  Also LIII go to Fairthorne Manor for an outdoor activity weekend. While these extras have be paid for they do provide pupils with a fantastic experience, out of school as well as being educational.

Science at Mayville is Fun!

That’s the verdict from pupils at Mayville High school as two hundred pupils gathered on Clarence Field in Southsea to find out everything there is to know about the hovercraft.

Pre-prep and junior children cheered as a number of pupils got to have a go in the James Bond Hovercraft used in the film Die Another Day.

The event was just one of many in a week long extravaganza at the school to mark Science and Technology Week. Terry George of the Hovercraft Museum in Lee on Solent had brought down a selection of small craft to show the children.

Sam de Jager said “It’s a great way to learn about friction, balance, and find out how  the hovercraft works and its fun”.

Matthew Crouch from year 6 who got to go in the James Bond craft  said,  “Its awesome. I like the way it’s designed, and all of the equipment, and it’s more fun than being in the classroom”.

Daren King the Deputy Head of Mayville’s Pre-prep and Junior School  said,  “Learning about science in this way makes it a far more exciting, appealing and interactive experience and children really like the practical element of it”.

Headteacher Martin Castle said, “The week was  aimed at how science and technology is relevant to our lives and for pupils at Mayville, the myth that science is in any way boring was totally dispelled”.

Mayville's Budding Writers Look To The Environment For Inspiration

At Mayville you won't find pupils suffering from writer’s block,  thanks to an initiative to take them straight to the source of inspiration.

In the summer term they abandoned their classroom in favour of Southsea beach, the whole of Mayville Junior School  just trawling the area for ideas for similes, metaphors, poems, and stories.

One group of pupils collected flotsam and jetsam which they then placed strategically along ropes, making up their own story lines, as they went along.

Others sought out their own touchstones, writing their ideas and questions on them, an idea inspired by Andrew Norris’s book the Touchstone.

Summer Moret, Year 6 came up with the idea “What comes first the chicken or the egg?”

Using chalk and writing words on pebbles some children made up their own poems about the sea and the surrounding environment.

Maisie Thompson from Year 5 said “It’s different from being in the classroom.  You are able to come up with more ideas because you can see them”.

Jack Tremorin in Year 6 said, “It’s very imaginative, a lot more interesting, and you can do new things.”

Deputy Head teacher of the Junior School Daren King, who’s notion it was to turn Southsea seafront into an outdoor classroom said, “By taking the pupils out of the classroom, and by taking them to the beach, we are hoping to inspire them into new and creative ways to write”.

And judging by some of the poetry and ideas put forward by some of the children it worked.

The Sea

The crystal blue sea shatters as it hits land

Massive deep and wide

It stretches for miles like elastic

Changing direction the whole time like a mad horse.

Mayville Believes That Every Child Can Acheive Within Physical Education.

Mayville Offers A Wide Range of Sporting and Creative Opportunities

Physical education plays an important role in the junior curriculum. All of the pupils follow a varied sports programme which is designed to develop team work and communication and stimulate the important values of honesty and determination.

Pupils are given the opportunity to experience a number of sports, including; football, rugby, cricket, netball, rounders, badminton, swimming, gymnastics, dance and athletics. Throughout the course of the year, there are many Interhouse sport competitions, which gives every pupil the chance to take participate in competitive sport and contribute to their house’s success. The Interhouse Swimming Gala and Sports Day are particular highlights of the sporting year.

As well as P.E lessons during the school day, there are a number of extra-curricular clubs for the children to take part in after school, which often compliment the lessons taught during the day. However, there are also opportunities for the children to try new sports, such as trampolining karate and table tennis.

The Junior School is involved in a number of sports league competitions. We play fixtures against other local independent schools throughout the year, which gives many of the pupils the chance to represent their school competitively. We are currently Portsmouth High 5 Netball Champions, as well as Portsmouth Primary Schools Swimming Champions.

Mayville's junior netball  team are a force to be reckoned with. The junior girls have gone from strength to strength over the season winning 36 matches. They have scored a total of 465 goals conceding only 73, making a goal difference of a startling 392.

The team took first place in the Wessex Netball League for the Autumn and Spring terms where they were unbeaten. They were also winners in the Dunhurst Tournament, the Portsmouth High School High 5s festival and the Alton tournament.

Their coach Jenny Lewis says “They played with such determination throughout the two terms, and they supported and encouraged each other”.

Oh what a Knight - Junior School Production 2009

This year the Junior school staged a fantastic performance of Oh What a Knight which they performed in the Linda Owens hall. This transforms easily into a studio theatre, and showcased the performance beautifully. Drama plays an important role at Mayville High School. Once a year at Mayville the whole School stages a musical production.  The older pupils take the main roles but each child will perform on stage. This develops self-confidence, improved physical awareness and the ability to work in group situations.

Individual Speech and Drama lessons are offered as an optional subject. Mayville pupils prove to be extremely successful at the Portsmouth Festival and in LAMDA examinations.

The Junior and Pre-prep pupils have a Poetry Recitation Day, usually in November.

Instrumental Tuition and Singing Lessons

All children in the Junior School learn to read and understand music. We start off in Lower III (Year 4), when all children spend one term learning the violin, brass and woodwind instruments.  In addition to this, group or individual lessons for brass, flute, piano, violin, guitar, drums, and other instruments are on offer.  Singing lessons are also available.

Pupils are encouraged to join our after school music group. We have an excellent, enthusiastic,   Junior School choir which often performs at local festivals.

Each child is a valued member of our school,

Our aim is to identify your child’s strengths and help them recognise their own potential. This encourages them to achieve not just academically but in every area of school life. At Mayville we believe it is the happy child who learns, and the confident pupil who fufils their potential . Education in our school is a three way process involving the school, pupils and their parents.
