Introduction Nursery Subjects Open Day
There is a family feeling amongst staff and pupils, where children grow up to care for others, and the environment.
Introduction

Mayville Nursery is designed to provide the best possible start to a child's education which will continue throughout the Mayville School for both boys and girls from the age of 6 months, through to 16 years.  Its bright, open classroom areas, coupled with an emphasis on safety, create a welcoming atmosphere where the child quickly feels at ease and ready to learn.  Our aim is to prepare children for the social and academic challenges of school life by providing a caring, safe and stimulating environment and to foster an enjoyment of learning.
Mayville operates within the Government grant system.

Nursery At The Cottage  - Early Years 6 months - +3

When you leave your child at Nursery for the first time you want them to be cared for as they would at home. At The Cottage children feel happy, cherished and secure in a small "home from home" environment. In our cosy bright building, with its own playground and garden, children are nutured by qualified Early Years staff. Our Ofsted registered  Nursery has also been awarded the much coveted Flying High for Early Years Accreditation that stamps the seal of excellence on the care we provide.

Head of Early Years for Portsmouth, Catherine Kickham, handed over the award which stamps a seal of excellence on the care Mayville High School Nursery provides. The Flying High for Early Years Award is given by Portsmouth City Council, and in order to receive the quality assurance accreditation, the Nursery  has had to fulfil strict criteria, to ensure standards of learning, development and care are high.

Nursery practioners are expected to have full knowledge of the latest research projects, and staff and managers alike are all assessed. Parents are also involved with the process, and the award is only given after external assessors are satisfied that the Nursery has met all of the scheme’s objectives.

Angela King Manager of the Nursery at the Cottage says “It’s been a lot of hard work but with the support of an excellent team behind me we are proud to have gained this award.” Mary Jones Head of the school’s Pre-prep Department says “I applaud the staff for their continued hard work and dedica and congratulate them on an award richly deserved”.

 The Cottage

The Cottage is divided  into three main areas. The Nest is for babies from six months to 14+months. The babies have a separate indoor play area, dining, and book area. There is also an ensuite bedroom, changing facilities and messy play area. For the Cygnets 12+months - 2 years, there is a play room/activity room, and a quiet room for story time or for those still requiring a sleep in the day.  The toilets have a separate changing area for children still in nappies or those who have started potty training.  Finally the Swans, 2- 3 year olds, have the use of three rooms, including a quiet area, rest area, main play area, and dining room. There is also a messy play room for painting and craft.   The garden has a  fully equipped play house, a huge stand up and play sandpit, a water play area, and safety surface all enclosed by brightly painted fences.  There are trikes, tyres, slides, obstacle courses and balancing beams, all of which aid learning and co-ordination through play.

Opening times

As we are open from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. for 50 weeks of the year, the Nursery offers peace of mind for working parents, who can be sure that their children are being well cared.  A morning session is from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and the afternoon session is from 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.  Care is available from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Being a department of Mayville High School, we are able to offer term-time only places, in other words you do not have to pay during the school holiday period if your child is not attending the Nursery. All-year round cover is also available (except for two weeks over the Christmas period) and this can be booked on a regular or intermittent basis. At Mayville we are very  flexible.

"The Nest" - for babies and children from six months to 14+ months
"Cygnets" - for 12 + months -2 years
"Swans" - (2-3 years)
"Kestrels" - open to children in the term that they will be four, this is situated in Mayville's Pre-prep Department.

 "The Nest "

Our 'Nest' welcomes  babies from the age of six months old, and  offers a small, caring, 'home from home' experience.  If you want us to follow your home routine at the Nursery we are happy to do so. Our team of specially trained staff work closely with parents and grandparents alike. Every child has a key member of staff assigned to them.

"The Nest" provides not only a loving atmosphere for babies but also a very stimulating one. Following the Government's Early Learning Goals, and Six areas of Learning, babies and children experience stimulating activities everyday. Don't be surprised to find your child covered in jelly, foam, or paint. Messy play encourages learning and is fun! Your child's progress is monitored and you will be kept updated on your child's progress.

"The Nest" is well equipped to provide stimulating experiences to aid your child's development in all areas. Babies are secure because of the loving care they are given by the staff, who ensure their individual needs are met.  Safety and hygiene have a high priority in this area.  When you as parents advise us that your child has started toilet training,  they then receive supportive and positive assistance from our Nursery staff.

Child play out in our own safe, secure playground, and are taken out on walks around the area in the Nursery pushchairs.  Our 'Nestlings' also have the opportunity to mix with the older Nursery children from time to time.

Breakfast, daily home cooked, freshly prepared lunches and tea are available.  Fees, session times and opening hours can all be found on the 'Fees' page.

"Cygnets"

Children become Cygnets from the age of 12+ months. At Mayville your child will embark on a Learning Journey. Our Nursery provides a secure environment in which children feel happy and relaxed. Supervised rest facilities are available for those children who need them.

Cygnets enjoy a wide variety  of creative activities, and loads of messy play. We encourage your child to spend time playing with foam, paint, jelly and pasta. Activities for Cygnets extend to include pegging, painting, singing and using musical instruments. Outdoor play is a part of everyday life for children at Mayville Nursery.

The Six Areas of Learning are also practised outside in the playground, with the area set up to acheive this. Our safety playground allows even the youngest to experience the freedom of being outside, in a secure controlled environment.

Don't be surprised to find your child has spent time playing with jelly, foam or paint - messy play encourages learning and its fun!

At Mayville Nursery you are never too small to be involved in painting and generally having fun!

Swans

For swans the emphasis is still on play, listening to stories, singing together and expressing themselves freely in art. These all help with the development of language, literacy, numeracy, and social sills.

Out and About at Mayville

Outings and trips to the park in our wonderful six seater buggy are always an adventure for the children. There are regular walks to the park, the seafront, and shops. Being seated higher than a normal pram, the children have a more stimulating view of their journey.

Computer Skills at the Nursery

Older children are encouraged to develop ICT skills, which in turn encourages hand-eye co-ordination. They learn control of simple equipment, using the mouse, and learn to perform simple functions and complete programmes.

 Making Friends at  Mayville Nursery

At Mayville because we regard the Nursery as the first Department of our School. Children who continue with their education at Mayville make friends and learn social skills that stay with them for  the rest of their life.

Learning About Nature

This year children at Mayville Nursery looked at the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. Nursery Manager, Angela King says " It was lovely for the children to see the butterflies hatching from their cocoons. It was a real hands on learning experience."

Sports Day is an important date on the Calendar for Everyone.

Mayville Nursery pupils join the Pre-prep Department for their Annual Sports Day and Teddy Bears Picninc, where friends  family, teachers and pupils enjoy a wonderful day of fun and activity.
Sports day at the Nursery is an important event in the Mayville Calendar. Even our smallest children are encouraged to have a healthy attitude towards physical education and learn to see sport as part of a healthy lifestyle.

"Kestrels"

In the term that a child becomes four they join the Kestrels class in our Pre-prep Department.

This offers a "half-way house" between Nursery and school.  Development is still principally play based but children are provided with additional opportunities to enhance literacy and numeracy skills as well as a continuation of the other lessons such as art, music, drama, physical education, cookery and French.
