The Senior School

In  The Senior School each pupil is a valued member of the community. There are a wide range of opportunities for pupils to excel in all areas. We continue to teach boys and girls seperately for most subjects and there is one class of boys and one class of girls. The progress of each pupil is carefully monitored, and appropriate support and extension programmes are put in place. Pupils in KS3 follow a full curriculum. In Remove (Y7), this includes thinking skills and first aid and also study skills seminars. In Lower IV (Y8) most pupils have the opportunity to study Spanish as well as French. Towards the end of Upper IV (Y9) pupils choose the optional subjects they wish to study, including any coursework element. Our results are a true reflection of the efforts of pupils and staff, which over the past ten years have been well above the national average.

"Relationships between staff and pupils are outstanding. Mutual respect is the norm" (ISC Inspection report).

At Mayville we believe that confidence is  the central building block to success in future life.

Children at Mayville enjoy a range of visits and field trips within the local area, which aim to enhance the learning that takes place in the classroom. The cost of these visits is included in the fees. Pupils are encouraged to look to the world beyond school  and there are optional visits for which a charge is made. Some of  these trips are abroad and include skiing, a visit to a Normandy chateau and excursions designed to extend the scope of GCSE courses.

Our commitment to Global Rock Challenge is just one such example. Membership of our own St John Ambulance cadet unit, (which includes assisting at public duties) and access to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme provides opportunities to develop a teamwork and leadership skills. We stage our own dramatic productions and there is an annual pupil-led inter-house Creative Arts Competition.

There are so many opportunities at Mayville: with equal amounts of encouragement and discipline pupils thrive". ( Parent)

Rock Challenge 2010 - The Works Of William Shakespeare

Mayville stormed their way through to the  Southern Finals of Rock Challenge with their stunning performance in the heats at the Guildhall. They came away with seven awards including overall winners of  the heat for their piece depicting the works of William Shakespeare.

Pupils from years 7-10 danced their hearts out in their  performance, their costumes and make up were equally fantastic.

Stuart McGregor, Development and  Communication Officer for the Be Your Best Foundation which runs Rock Challenge, said, "The judges were very very impressed with the work Mayville High School produced".

Lorraine Hepburn, drama teacher at Mayville who also co-ordinates the event said, " The whole school is on a high about it.  Rock Challenge is a fantastic tool for us".

Mayville has taken part in Rock Challenge since it first started in 1996, and was in the premiership for many years making it amongst the top 12 performers in the country. With this performance  it was a step back to those glory days.  For the whole school it was a massive effort and everyone involved in any small way deserves huge praise.

Cast of talents

Our new purpose built school school hall which turns into a studio theatre, was former Headteacher,  Linda Owen's dream following the floods in Southsea, nearly a decade ago.  A production of  Joseph was a wonderful tribute and farewell to her.

Sport At Mayville

Sport promotes teamwork, stirs your child's competitive spirit, harnesses their determination and instils a sense of fair play. By creating a positive attitude towards physical education amongst our pupils they will be well placed to enjoy sport as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Swimming, Tramopolining and Volleyball are some of the wide range of sports that pupils in the Senior School get to experience.. GCSE physical education is a popular and successful option at KS4 for those wishing to study sport as part of the academic curriculum.

Pupils have up to 7 lessons a week covering different sports. They are divided into three houses, Austen, Cavell, and Nelson. This promotes a great team spirit in the school.

Mayville is successful in local and county competitions, and some pupils have had the chance to represent Hampshire and Portsmouth. Where pupils are particularly talented the school endeavours to support their training needs and competition commitments at county and national level.

As a school Mayville plays a lot of badminton and has a term of swimming for each year in KS3. As a school we dominate the Portsmouth badminton competitions and often compete in the Hampshire finals. We also boast a good number of club swimmers, which reflects the amount of PE time students get in these areas. We also do particularly well in other sports we compete in like rugby and cricket, in relation to the size of our school.

We offer extensive clubs throughout the year, including Badminton, Football, Netball, Trampolining, Dance, Cricket, Rounders, Volleyball and a GCSE PE club to extend to all Key Stage 4 pupils.

Pupils get the chance to participate in trampolining classes at Wimbledon Park Sports Centre

At Mayville most sports are played off-site at a variety of local venues within walking distance or quickly reached in our fleet of minibuses.

Mayville's ethos is that pupils are part of a caring community and are taught to respect and support each other.

Pupils learn to meet the challenges of the wider world, and understand that they are part of a glocal community. They are encouraged to be involved in fundraising for projects both home and abroad. Every two years pupils in year 11 are offered the opportunity to travel to Kenya for a month to take part in a trip that involves helping to build local communities, some conservation work and also learning to dive. Those participating must help raise some of the funding themselves. This involves teamwork and planning. Those pupils that have been on the visit say that it many ways it is "a life changing experience, "and Mayville are glad to offer pupils the chance to be involved in such a visit.
